Hoping for a clean and healthy complexion is top of the beauty list for most of us, but what do we do when we are faced with clogged pores? Many of us will chose to cover up, but unclogged pores give a fresh even skin tone and glow. So whether you are a teenager with problem skin or have more mature skin, it is important to know how to clean out pores effectively.
What are clogged pores?
Pores in our skin connect to oil glands, also known as sebaceous glands, through the hair follicle. They produce an oily, waxy substance called sebum, and sometimes produce it in excess, which blocks the pore. Dead skin cells inside the pore clump together, along with sebum and hair, and remain trapped under the surface.
So what can we do about it?
1. Facial steam baths with essential oils are an effective way to loosen and unclog the pore. Pour near-boiling water in a large bowl and add the essential oils. Next lean over the bowl and cover your head with a clean towel for about 15 minutes. Start with a clean face, and finish with a natural moisturiser.
Effective essential oils include: bergamot, rosemary, sage, lavender and juniper.
2. Tomatoes contain lactic acid and can be used as a natural exfoliate, preventing the clogging of pores. Using mashed tomatoes, put them through a sieve and mix with ground oatmeal to act as a mask. Leave on for about 20 minutes.
3. Jojoba oil is very similar to our own sebum and can be used to combat clogged pores. Sebum is mainly composed of triglycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters and squalene. Jojoba is composed of wax esters and fatty acids. It is this similarity that can help reduce sebum production. As it mixes with the hardened sebum plug and dissolves and unclogs the pore. This isn't a quick fix, but persisting with it for a couple of weeks should yield results. Apply a thin layer daily.
