Chemicals in your Tampons?

September 12, 2017

There are some experts who are concerned about the use of certain harmful materials and chemicals that are used to make sanitary wear for women.

An article from Time Inc. states the concern in detail, "In particular, a group of chemicals sometimes referred to as “endocrine disruptors”—because they may mess with the hormones your body’s endocrine system regulates—have been linked to brain disorders, reproductive issues, obesity and cancer. Unfortunately, experts say tampons belong on this growing list of potentially hazardous personal care products."

The article goes on to quote Ami Zota, an assistant professor of environmental health at George Washington University as she warns of the specific dangers of continual use of such a product, "Unlike something you swallow, substances you place inside your vagina may not go through the body's typical elimination and metabolic processes ... Instead, tampon chemicals are absorbed by the vaginal mucosa, and from there are able to pass almost directly into your bloodstream."

The key to feeling confident about the tampons and pads we use on a monthly basis is finding a company that lists their ingredients and are transparent about how their product is made.  Alternatives include companies such as Natracare, an organic company who lists their ingredients, ensuring the products are both chlorine free and plastic free, giving the user confidence and peace of mind.
